Mike is playing ball at Ryan's house when he gets a phone call from his mom, who's at friends' house, telling him to head home because of an impending thunderstorm. Normally he would have asked to wait the storm out at Ryan's, but he still has homework and it's already after five on Sunday afternoon. He rides his bike to his house and goes inside when the tornado sirens start screaming. He checks the local weather on TV and sees a giant funnel cloud on the TV tower cam before the electricity goes off. He and his sister run for the basement. Then everything changes.
Although this novel is fiction, the events of the F-5 tornado that devastated Joplin, Missouri, are very real.

That Sunday Afternoon Veda Boyd Jones

I always wonder what I would do in such a situation as the tornado event in this story. What a young boy does blends together well, a fiction story with real life events. I have long enjoyed Veda's books and short stories and was not disappointed in this one. As a Missourian I kept up with the news out of Joplin following that horrible day. Veda's book depicts some of those actual events. The main character was a 12 year old boy and the things he did and saw in the aftermath made me, a great grandmother, wonder what I would have done in the same circumstances. The book was excellent in suspense, in compassion and in service as well. It was a very good look at the way Americans pull together as they always do, which in today's society, the news media seems so astounded that people really do help other people. Yes the book is fiction based, on a real disaster, but it is so true to life in a Midwestern community. I loved it.

That Sunday Afternoon Veda Boyd Jones Reviews

This is a touching story based on the very real tragedy that occurred in and around the city of Joplin, Missouri, during the May 22, 2011 tornado outbreak. For those who may wonder what it may have been like for the citizens of that community just before, during, and after one of the deadliest tornadoes in U.S. history, this might be something you'd want to look at.
Well written first person account of the events that impacted Joplin Missouri that Sunday in May and changed so many lives in a matter of minutes. I couldn't stop reading once I started and being a Missourian I felt a sense of pride when I read how everyone rallied around the ravaged city and the people who lost everything.

If you enjoy reading about the triumph of the human spirit in the path of one of the most violent storms ever to hit Missouri, then this is the book for you.
I was touched by the reality and compassion with which Veda described the trauma of such a life changing tragedy. I had to read it straight through. I think "seeing" the storm the way a child saw it was touching. No one who knew anyone from Joplin or had been to Joplin to eat or shop was left untouched.
I don't know why but I always have a fascination with tornadoes and stories about them, although I hate the destruction they bring. Anyway, this was a good read and I would recommend it. I don't live anywhere near Joplin but I remember very well when this tornado happened and how horrific it was. This book gives some insight into what the residents of Joplin had to endure, and I enjoyed the viewpoint of the boy telling the story.
Mrs. Jones did an excellent job of portraying the events of "the storm" from so many different eyes those who lost everything, those on the periphery, those that volunteered in the moment and those that came in to help in the days following the event. All view points were emotional and gripping and each ended in Hope. This is a vivid and poignant account of an event that effected thousands of lives and touched many more.
After living through the tornado I know and understand what happened that day and the many days that followed (after being homeless for several months I finally moved to the west coast). The stories that come from the survivors of Joplin have much more substance than this bit of work.

There are ebooks available that offer more insight into the events of that day and immediate events that entailed than this.
Not sure what the previous reviewer was talking about since this is fiction. The book is a page-turning fictional account of that awful afternoon. The details are certainly true but the author has skillfully woven in the story of two fictional families to reflect what happened to so many that day. I know because I was in the midst of that chaos after being buried under the debris of a building. Unlike so many others I survived with minor injuries. This story made my skin prickle as I read it. You can't go wrong by buying this book so you can experience the horror of a natural disaster that put a town under siege courtesy of Mother Nature.
