An immediate bestseller upon its publication in 1880, the anonymously penned Democracy prompted widespread speculation and guessing games as to its author’s identity. It is the story of Mrs. Lightfoot Lee, a society widow, and Silas Ratcliffe, the most influential member of the Senate, who, throughout the novel, pursues Mrs. Lee while at the same time battling her for power. Set in Washington in the 1870s, Democracy presents a scathing and incisive look at the intricate inner workings of politics and corruption that remains relevant today.

I remember watching a PBS miniseries about the Adams Family* in the 1970s or '80s. In one of the later (last?) episodes, Henry Adams writes a book that he is sure will scandalize all of Washington D.C., and publishes "Democracy: an American Novel" anonymously on April 1, 1980. He is not disappointed by the District's reaction. The book was discussed in the press in 1996 when "Primary Colors" was published, also by 'Anonymous' (Joe Klein). I think I looked for "Democracy" at that time... but it wasn't in my local library or bookstore, and if Amazon existed, I wasn't aware of it yet (remember dial-up in the 90s?). Now, however, it is available in 60 seconds, and for free. So when something prompted me to think about this book again recently, I googled "Adams" + "Anonymous", figured out what I was looking for, and turned on my K2.

I highly recommend this book to all my fellow history buffs and political junkies, especially if you subsist on a diet that is virtually all meaty non-fiction: think of this as a little high-carb dessert treat. It skewers congressmen, senators, governors, lobbyists, presidents, first ladies & other political wives, diplomatists, ambassadors, visiting royalty, cabinet-members, political parties, and, (gulp), female political junkies. It has a congressman named Gore, and a New York Senator named Clinton, and, would you believe, a former Illinois Governor who steals elections and takes bribes! Can you imagine? A corrupt law-breaking former IL Gov?!

It should be a movie. Or, at least, a PBS miniseries. Until then, read the book.

Now, about this edition: it is free, and you get what you pay for. God bless the "community" that formatted it for cheapskates like me. I would give it 5 stars, but even cheapskates like me get a little annoyed by constant typos--hence 4 out of 5. A few examples: the "baffle" of Waterloo; royalty sitting up on a "d?as", and the insertion of paragraph returns almost every time a "Mr." occurs. If, gentle reader, you are particularly disturbed by typographical error and inaccuracy, you may want to pay for one of the other e-versions.

*I hope I don't have to explain which Adams family.

Democracy an American Novel Henry Adams 9781480129559 Books Reviews

This book was recommended by the Slate Political Gabfest as one of the best novels ever written about Washington, D.C. Since it was written well over a century ago, I anticipated that it would feel dated. Instead, the novel feels incredibly fresh. From the smart and ambitious young widow taking the political establishment by storm to the idealistic young war veteran lawyer advising her to the scheming and aging senator to the out-of-his-depth president, all of the characters (while obviously drawn on real people of the day) are recognizable and fun. Anyone who has any interest in politics will enjoy this, regardless of what side of the political aisle they fall on.
